Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Its school headquarters is located in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province.

HIT was founded in 1920. The original name is Harbin Sino-Russian Industrial School. Later, it was also called Sino-Russian Industrial University and Eastern Province Special Economic Zone University of Industry. The school was officially named Harbin Institute of Technology until 1928.

In 1951, HIT was identified as one of the two model universities in the country for studying foreign higher education education models. In 1954, it entered the list of the first batch of six universities under national key construction. In 1999, HIT was identified as one of the first nine universities in the country’s first batch of “985 Project” key construction projects. In 2000, it was merged with Harbin Architecture University to form the new Harbin Institute of Technology.
